What is Electronic component?

In the development of electronic industry technology, due to the emergence of semiconductor integrated circuits, electronic circuits have two major branches: integrated circuits and discrete component circuits.

Integrated circuit (IC Integrated Circuit): is the circuit that interconnects transistors, resistance-capacitance inductors and other components and wiring, and it is fabricated on a small or several small semiconductor wafers or dielectric substrates, and packaged as a single circuit. Overall, this electronic component has circuit functions.

Discrete components: it refers to single electronic components such as common resistors, capacitors, transistors, etc., collectively referred to as discrete components. A discrete component is a single-function, "minimum" component with no other functional units inside.

An electronic component is any basic discrete device or physical entity in an electronic system used to affect electrons or their associated fields. Electronic components are mostly industrial products, available in a singular form and are not to be confused with electrical elements, which are conceptual abstractions representing idealized electronic components. Electronic components have two or more electrical terminals aside from antennas which may only have one terminal.

These leads connect, usually soldered to a printed circuit board, to create an electronic circuit with a particular function. Basic electronic components may be packaged discretely, as arrays or networks of like components, or integrated inside of packages such as semiconductor integrated circuits, hybrid integrated circuits, or thick film devices.
